What is neck pain?
Neck pain is what we experience anytime our neck hurts. It is a common problem caused by poor posture, diseases, or injury from a fall. It is often not a serious condition, but sometimes, neck pain can indicate a more serious health problem.
Symptoms of neck pain
Neck pain has several symptoms, ranging from mild discomfort in your neck to intense pain that spreads across your upper region. Other signs are muscle tightness in the neck region, inability to move your head, headaches, or pain when holding your head in one position for a long time.
Causes of neck pain
Some minor activities like reading on a bed or hunching over a computer for a long period can strain your neck muscles and make you feel pain. Like other joints in the body, the neck joints also deteriorate over time. When this wear-down happens, you may feel pain in the neck region. Furthermore, injuries resulting from sports or a fall may strain the tissues in the neck and cause pain. Lastly, some diseases like cancer and rheumatoid arthritis can also cause neck pain.
What to do if you have neck pain?
Most neck pain can be resolved with home treatment like ice therapy, exercise, stretching, and more. However, talk to your doctor if your neck pain is severe, persists for days, or is caused by a fall or accident.
