Long Term Care & Rehabilitation

Long-term care is a type of medical care that helps with many needs of the patient, including but not limited to: dressing, bathing, eating, walking around, or being in bed. Long-term care may also help with managing pain and symptoms. Depending on the level of need and the severity of the illness or injury that caused it, long-term care will alter in form based on what’s needed.

Rehabilitation, in contrast, is medical care that helps the patient recover and returns to their previous way of functioning. Rehabilitation programs aim to restore physical function or improve mental health. Depending on the level of need and the severity of illness or injury that caused it, rehabilitation will alter in form based on what’s needed.

Is Rehab Considered Long-Term Care?

While rehabilitation may include long-term care, they are not the same thing. Long-term care is a type of medical care and doesn’t always involve rehab. Similarly, not all rehab involves long-term care. If you have questions about a patient’s health plan or what will be covered by insurance, it is best to speak directly with their provider rather than making assumptions.

Long-term care for senior citizens is usually provided by nursing homes or similar facilities but can also be provided by a relative or friend. In the past, long-term care was only provided to the aged because of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of progressive dementia. However, many older people have long found what a nursing home or similar facility provides to be more than acceptable. As a result, some individuals may choose to provide themselves with various forms of long-term care. As the population ages, long-term care has become a major concern to many countries.

The types of long-term care provided vary greatly depending on each person’s unique situation and needs. Due to this variation, the amount of nursing home care expenses can range from an insignificant amount for someone with only minor chronic medical issues to over $10,000 annually for a severely disabled individual.

Types of Rehabilitation

Cognitive rehabilitation

Cognitive rehabilitation is used to try to reverse or reduce the effects of cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment is a disease or injury that affects how the patient thinks, learns, remembers, and communicates with others. Effects from medications or alcohol use may also cause cognitive impairments. Cognitive rehabilitation can include many activities, like speech and language therapy, behavioral and vocational training, exercise programs, and other special programs for brain damage.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is used to help the patient improve functionality. In addition, occupational therapists work with the patient, and their families, to improve daily living skills. This type of rehabilitation can also help patients with disabilities or injuries to improve their ability to perform daily tasks and reach their full potential.

Speech Rehabilitation Therapy

Speech rehab therapy is for those patients who have, due to injury or trauma, lost their ability to speak fluently. A qualified professional called a speech therapist can help such individuals regain their speaking ability by regularly practicing drills with them and pushing them to do their best. Medication may or may not be involved; however, for the most part, regaining one’s speech depends upon the amount of time spent practicing with a professional speech therapy practitioner.

Speech-language therapy

Speech-language therapy is used to help patients with communication difficulties caused by disease or injury. Speech pathologists try to improve the patient’s ability to speak and listen through various methods, including exercises, relaxation techniques, and various tools such as reading machines. Speech-language therapy services may be offered individually or in small groups.

Nursing Homes vs. Long Term Care

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities provide people with similar services, but they aren’t the same. Nursing homes are only available to those 65 years of age and older who require total assistance to meet all their daily needs. Long-term care facilities may accept individuals of younger ages and have programs that provide a little more independence than a nursing home would allow. Nursing homes are also more curative in nature, while long-term care facilities focus on rehabilitation.

Rehab Centers vs. Long Term Care Facilities

Rehab centers provide medical care, counseling, physical therapy (such as physical and occupational therapies), social work services, and other types of treatment; while offering the greatest degree of independence among long-term care facilities. However, nursing homes and long-term care facilities offer rehabilitation programs that fit this definition. In these cases, you’ll typically find greater care needs but less nursing.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Rehabilitation

Inpatient rehabilitation is where a patient completes the program while living at the facility. Outpatient rehabilitation can be completed in a patient’s home or another type of health care facility, such as a nursing home. It allows for greater independence and flexibility on the part of the patient.

Home-Based Rehabilitation

Home-based rehabilitation, also called outpatient rehabilitation, is a program that allows you to work with the staff to create customized rehabilitation goals suited to your needs. It allows patients and their families to receive more services in the home than would be possible in a nursing home.

Which is better for me? Which is better for my family? Which is safer for me? Decisions like these can be confusing and can make it difficult to know what to choose or what you should accept.

The following information can help you make the right decision and find the right place for rehabilitation, whether it’s a nursing home or a long-term care facility.

Earning Benefits

To qualify for benefits when choosing long-term care placement options, it’s important to understand how these benefits work and be aware of any limitations and restrictions. This includes:

Medical benefits are offered through most long-term care settings. Most individuals eligible for Medicare will also qualify for Medicaid if they have very low incomes. In addition, there are other options available to patients who are not eligible for Medicaid, including Medicare Advantage plans.

Non-medical long-term care services and supports can be paid for with a variety of public programs. These may include the Medicaid Personal Care Services Program or the Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Program. These programs usually require you to pay for any expenses that aren’t covered by your medical benefits. A full list of these programs is available on the state’s long-term care website.

Most long-term care facilities offer some form of private insurance for their patients. This can be Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.

Certain state programs also provide funding for long-term care services and support payments. This may include Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, or Long Term Care Insurance – which is usually offered by a nursing home as an alternative to private insurance.

When you’re enrolling in long-term care insurance, realize most companies require a specific type of nursing home or other long-term care facilities.

Who Requires Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care?

Rehabilitation and long-term care are required for people who have experienced a recent injury or illness, which has caused them to need assistance with their daily activities. People who require rehabilitation or long term care include but are not limited to:

  • Individuals who have experienced a stroke
  • Individuals who have had recent surgery, such as knee or hip surgery
  • Individuals who have had an amputation of part of their body, such as the leg or arm
  • Individuals with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease requiring regular treatments and monitoring. Long-term care facilities are also good options for individuals with dementia. However, nursing homes typically offer dementia care plans that are more suitable than long-term care facilities can provide.
  • In addition to those who require long-term care or rehabilitation, individuals may also qualify for Medicare benefits based on their condition. Qualifying for Medicare can be a matter of personal choice and depends on your illness, age, and other medical conditions.

Conclusion

Individuals who are in need of long-term care or rehabilitation can find these services in a nursing home or long-term care facility.

Individuals who have used long-term care services may then qualify for Medicare benefits. Individuals who do not use the Medicare program and have no other coverage may either pay for their long-term care services out of pocket or are eligible for Medicaid long-term care benefits. The latter is possible if you meet your state’s requirements!
